Our Day at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo

Photo Contest!

By Rachel January 16, 2014
There is a bite to the air on most of our January days and one of my family's favorite thing to do is to go to the zoo.  The cold weather makes the animals more active so it provides a unique opportunity to see animals that are normally hard to spot.  I know each time we go, we experience something new!

This month the zoo is doing a photo contest, go to http://www.rosamondgiffordzoo.org/photo-contest
for more details on specific contest rules.  The photo is to be of an animal at the zoo.  With their increased activity you are sure to get some great shots!

My family went this past weekend.  The air temperature was about 35 degrees but felt about 4!  We did the outside so that we could get some great shots!  My mother joined us for this event and she made us laugh when she wanted to use the pigeons sitting on the top of the barn as her animal shot!  She is so funny!

Brenna wanted to take a photo of the bunnies, which is not a surprise because she has been on a bunny kick for pretty much the last two years! We were happy to see them out and hopping all over.  Hopefully that satisfied the bunny itch for a while!  The animal barn has become an interesting area where you can not only see farm animal species but also area must sees including a opossum and a barn owl.  If you manage to glimpse the opossum, send me the shot because I have yet to see it!

Lily is my resident photographer.  She took control of the camera on
the next few shots and got a lovely shot of the miniature horse, a swan sleeping and the alpacas.  Love the attention to detail, even at seven she knows what is a good shot and what is not.  I fully expect her to someday be on the African plains photographing large cats.  Right now though, I am happy to see her flex her little wings on this project!

Olivia on the other hand likes to do the zoo as a drive through option, she runs from exhibit to exhibit and back again.  I think that she thinks she will miss something if she doesn't run.  I on the other hand would prefer if I could lock her into a stroller and see each exhibit, I think for now, we are going to have to agree to disagree.

Even though it is intimidating sometimes to have our little point and shoot camera next to someone with a huge lens, don't be!  This contest is nice because there are different categories so I encourage you and your family to try it and see what wonderful photos you can take!

If
you have your camera and the form from the link on the website above you can receive a free admission to the zoo until January 31st.
